About
Ælfgifu of Shaftesbury (d.944), first wife of King Edmund I, died young; within five years of her husband's accession; and was buried at Shaftesbury Abbey, where miracles were soon reported at her tomb and she was venerated as St Ælfgifu. The mother of two kings, Eadwig and Edgar the Peaceful, she is both a saint and an ancestress of this family.
