About
Ælfgifu of York (d. by 1002) was the first wife of Æthelred the Unready, daughter of Thored, earl of York; a northern marriage for a young king who needed the north. She bore most of his many children, among them Edmund Ironside, before dying young, whereupon the king married Emma of Normandy. Through Edmund she is ancestress of the English royal line that returned after the Conquest; and of us. Her father Thored, Earl of York, now stands above her.
