Research notes

~ Aethelhelm, Ealdorman of Wiltshire (d. [12] Jun 897), who took the West Saxon alms to Rome in 887 and fought at Buttington 893 (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle). Medieval Lands places Aelfflaed, second wife of Edward the Elder, as his daughter - the Book of Hyde calls her 'Elfelmi comitis filia', and the identification of 'Elfelm' with Aethelhelm is the usual modern one, hence ~. Source: Medieval Lands (fmg.ac, Cawley), 'England, Anglo-Saxon nobility'. [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 19 Oct 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] || NOTE ONLY (19 Oct 2026): a common modern theory makes Aethelhelm a son of King Aethelred I of Wessex (Alfred's elder brother), based on his prominence at the head of Alfred's charter witness lists; no source states it, so it is not wired.
