Agnes Gates was of the knightly house of Gates of Rivenhall - the family of Sir John Gates, who backed Lady Jane Grey in 1553 and went to the block for it. She married into the Crachrodes of Cust Hall, a generation before her kinsman's gamble, and her quiet Essex marriage is the reason this family carries Gates blood rather than Gates notoriety.
