✓ as wife and mother, ~ as a Clare: Alice (Adelisa) de Tonbridge, first wife of William de Percy (d. 1174/5, I99981), named in his Whitby confirmation ('pro Aliza uxore mea'), in his Sawley gift ('Adelidae uxoris meae et Alani heredis mei'), and by her daughters: 'Mathildis de Percy comitissa de Warwic' gave to Sawley for the souls of 'patris mei Willielmi de Percy et Adalidis de Tunbrige matris meae et Alani de Percy fratris mei et Agnetis sororis meae', and Agnes de Percy (I99979) likewise for 'Willielmi de Percy patris mei et Adelidis de Tunebrigge matris meae'. She d. before 1166, when William m. 2ndly Sibyl de Valognes. Medieval Lands: 'ALICE de Tonbridge, daughter of ---' and 'The reference to Tonbridge suggests that she may have been Adelisa de Clare, daughter of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare & his wife Agnes [Adelisa] of Chester.' Entered on that basis as a daughter of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare (I99579, d. 1136) and Adeliz of Chester (F99545) at ~ - the usual identification, hedged by Medieval Lands; Aynsley's CP X 'Percy' page may settle it. She was probably da. of Richard FitzGilbert (de Clare), by Alice, sister of Ranulph, Earl of Chester (see ante, vol. iii, p. 243); on chronological grounds this is more likely than the suggestion made by Round in Feudal England, ped. at p. 472, that her father was Richard's father Gilbert, who, moreover, had a da. Alice who m. Aubrey de Vere.' CP and Medieval Lands therefore agree, and both say 'probably' - the Clare parentage remains ~ by this tree's rules. Living 1148. Source: Complete Peerage 2nd ed. vol.
