About
Amadeus II (c.1050-1080), Count of Savoy, is remembered for one January: in 1077 he and his mother Adelaide of Susa held the Mont Cenis pass when the excommunicate Emperor Henry IV came begging passage through the snows to make his submission at Canossa; and they exacted a province's worth of concessions for the crossing. Gatekeepers of the Alps: that was the house of Savoy's fortune, and Amadeus its early master. Our line runs through his son Humbert II.
