About

Amadeus the Third, Count of Savoy, founder of the abbey of Hautecombe where his house would bury its dead for seven centuries, took the cross with his nephew Louis VII and died at Nicosia in 1148, coming home broken from the Second Crusade - the same doomed expedition that killed the Earl of Surrey in this ancestry. Savoy's counts recovered; the crusade's reputation never did.
