✓ DOCUMENTED (Visitation of Essex, De Vere pedigree p.47, photographed 21 Jul 2026; a nationally recorded figure): AUBREY DE VERE, "2nd sone" of John de Vere, 15TH EARL OF OXFORD; m. (per the visitation) a dau. of Sir Anthony Gebons (Gibbon) of Norfolk - NB modern peerage accounts usually give his wife as MARGARET SPRING of Lavenham: two wives or a conflict, unresolved (~ on the wife; verify in Complete Peerage vol. X). ||COKAYNE 'VERE' pp.26-27 READ 7 Aug 2026 - DOES NOT RESOLVE THE WIFE QUESTION|| These are the VERE *barony* pages, not the OXFORD earldom article, so the Gibbon-vs-Spring conflict on Aubrey's first wife STANDS UNRESOLVED and vol. X (or the Oxford article) is still the test. What the pages DO give, all of it COLLATERAL and deliberately note-only: (a) 'VERE OF TILBURY' - Sir HORACE VERE, cr. Baron Vere of Tilbury 1625, was 'yst. of the 4 sons of the Hon. GEOFFREY DE VERE (3d s. of John, EARL OF OXFORD)', i.e. a son of Aubrey's YOUNGER BROTHER Geoffrey. So the FIGHTING VERES - Sir Francis Vere, Governor of Brill, and Sir Horace, the hero of Nieuport 1600 and the siege of Ostend, of whom Fuller wrote that Horace 'had more meekness and as much valour as his brother' - were AUBREY'S NEPHEWS. Horace m. Mary, sister of the 1st Viscount Tracy of Rathcoole and yst. dau. of Sir John Tracy of Toddington, co. Gloucester; d.s.p.m. of apoplexy while dining with Sir Henry Vane at Whitehall, May 1635, aged about 70, when the barony became extinct; his five daughters married an Earl of Clare, an Earl of Westmorland, a Baron Poulett, a Wolstenholme, and THOMAS FAIRFAX, 3RD LORD FAIRFAX OF CAMERON, THE PARLIAMENTARY GENERAL. His widow was buried at Castle Hedingham in 1671/2 aged 90. (b) 'VERE OF HANWORTH' (1750) is the Beauclerk Dukes of St Albans and has NO connection to this line. NEPHEWS AND COUSINS, NOT ANCESTORS - recorded here rather than wired, per the direct-ancestors-only rule of 7 Aug 2026.. Children per the visitation: John (d.s.p.), HUGH (m. AT HEDINGHAM 23 AUG 1575 - CP X p.256 note d - Elianora Walshe; father of ROBERT DE VERE, 19TH EARL OF OXFORD from 1626, killed at the siege of Maastricht 7 Aug 1632; whence also the 20th and last Earl, d. 1703 - so Aubrey's male line inherited the earldom, its title vindicated in the 1626 Lords case crowned by Chief Justice Crewe's "where is Bohun?... and yet let the name and dignity of de Vere stand so long as it pleaseth God" - CP X pp.256-57; the full heir-male recital naming AUBREY'S WIFE = CP X p.247 note g, STILL TO PULL), Anne, Bridgett (m. Thomas Crachewood), and JANE (m. Henry Hunte of Gosfield 1573 - OUR LINE). d. c. 1580. HIS BROTHER'S WILL NAMES HIM AND HIS CHILDREN (PROB 11/46/247, 1562/3, transcribed 22 Jul 2026): "my brother Awbrey Veer" - sons Hugh and John (GBP20 each at 21), daughters Anne (eldest, 100 marks), Bridgett and JANE (GBP40 each at marriage or majority) - matching the visitation name-for-name (the visitation's Robert d.s.p. absent, presumably dead by 1562). Jane's filiation to him is therefore ✓ DUAL-SOURCED. His own will remains unfound (PCC null under 'Vere'; further tests: Veer/Veere spellings, forename-only search 1570-1600, then Essex RO wills) - now confirmatory only. Direct ancestor. Added 21 Jul 2026; proven via his brother's will 22 Jul 2026. ||RESOLVED 8 Aug 2026 (Aynsley; TWO MARRIAGES, not a conflict, same pattern as the Camoys case)|| Aubrey married TWICE: (1) MARGARET SPRING of Lavenham (b.1517, d.1554) - OUR line, mother of Jane de Vere (I99104), already wired in F99625; and (2) a GIBBON/Guybon of Norfolk (dau. of Sir Anthony Gibbon of Lynn), his SECOND wife, married after 11 Jul 1562, no issue to our line, already wired in F99500. So the Visitation ('Gibbon') and the modern accounts ('Spring') were never in conflict - he had both. The Gibbon-vs-Spring flag is CLOSED; p.247 note g would only formally confirm the second marriage. MARGARET SPRING'S PARENTAGE - PRIMARY SOURCE 8 Aug 2026 (Thomas Spring III's will, TNA PROB 11/21/179, 13 Jun 1523, with Nina Green's apparatus, supplied by Aynsley): Margaret Spring was a NIECE of Thomas Spring III 'the Rich Clothier of Lavenham' - i.e. of the Lavenham Spring clothier house but a rung to the side. Her exact FATHER is UNRESOLVED: Verily Anderson (De Veres of Castle Hedingham, p.141) calls her 'daughter of the testator's brother John Spring', but Nina Green shows the testator had NO brother John (his brothers were William, d.1510, and James, d.1493). The blog reading 'Sir John Spring x Dorothy Waldegrave' is IMPOSSIBLE - that John Spring was the testator's SON and heir, chronologically far too young to father a girl born c.1517. So Margaret's parents stay UNWIRED (correctly). The will's apparatus also CONFIRMS the two marriages: Aubrey 'married firstly the testator's niece, Margaret Spring, and secondly Bridget Gibbon, daughter of Sir Anthony Gibbon (or Guybon).' Definitive further source = Aubrey de Vere's own will, ERO D/AMR 3/281 (18 Jan 1580). ||AUBREY'S OWN WILL - PRIMARY SOURCE 8 Aug 2026 (ERO D/AMR 3/281, 18 Jan 1580, Nina Green transcript, supplied by Aynsley)|| Confirms from the record: 2nd son of the 15th Earl of Oxford x Elizabeth Trussell; 1st wife MARGARET SPRING (niece of Thomas Spring of Lavenham; buried Castle Hedingham 11 Jul 1562); 2nd wife BRIDGET GIBBON (da. of Sir Anthony Gibbon of Lynn, Norfolk). Per the 16th Earl's will (TNA PROB 11/46/247), Aubrey's FIVE children - sons Hugh & John, daughters Anne, Bridget & Jane - were ALL living in 1562, hence all by the 1st wife Margaret Spring (Bridget Gibbon married in only after 1562, no issue to us). So our Jane (I99104) is firmly Margaret Spring's daughter. COLLATERAL: Aubrey's daughter Bridget Vere (Jane's sister) married a CRACHERODE - echoing the Cracherode-Hunt tie already in our tree.
