About

Baldwin the Fifth, Count of Flanders, was regent of France for the young Philip the First and the father of Matilda, who married William the Conqueror. The counts of Flanders are one of the great gateway pedigrees of European genealogy, the road by which most documented medieval descents reach Charlemagne, and this family travels it.
