About
Beatrice, first wife of Rodulf de Warenne, is argued to be the mother of the first Earl of Surrey and a niece of Duchess Gunnor, which is why the Warennes were of the duchess's kin.
Research notes
~ BEATRICE, 1st wife of Rodulf de Warenne (charter-attested Preaux 1053, Holy Trinity by 1055; d. 1053x59). AS MOTHER of William 1st Earl: Loyd's argument, accepted by Clay (EYC 8) and CP IX App.A - one charter clause appears to group William with the 2nd wife Emma, but Beatrice was living 1053 and William fought at Hastings, so he cannot be Emma's son; 'too much weight should not be attached to a particular pronoun' (Loyd). AS NIECE OF DUCHESS GUNNOR: Robert of Torigni's addition to Jumieges - queried '[?]' even in Clay's own pedigree chart - grade ~, a COUSINSHIP to the ducal house, not a descent. Both hedges recorded here so no future chat hardens them. Added 14 Sep 2026.
