About

Bleddyn ap Cynfyn (d.1075), King of Powys and Gwynedd, ruled most of Wales in the generation of the Norman Conquest and is one of the few Welsh kings remembered as a lawgiver: tradition credits him with revising the laws of Hywel Dda. He fought alongside the English against the Normans on the marches and was killed by treachery in 1075; 'the gentlest and most merciful of kings', the Chronicle of the Princes mourned, 'who did harm to none save when injured'. The later kings of Powys, and our line, descend from him. His parents Cynfyn and Queen Angharad, and through her the kings of Deheubarth, are now in the tree above him.

Research notes

*** UPDATE - READ FIRST (8 Oct 2026): the floor/open statement below HAS BEEN LIFTED - see the new parent records for sources and grades. Opening kept as audit trail. *** ✓ Brut; Lloyd: BLEDDYN AP CYNFYN (d.1075), law-reviser; father of Maredudd (our line). ||RESEARCH-FLAG|| FRONTIER-ish: father Cynfyn ap Gwerystan + royal mother Angharad ferch Maredudd ~ NOTE-ONLY - the pedigree-tract edge, treated as at Egbert. Added 14 Sep 2026. STATUS CLARIFIED same day: Bleddyn himself and the two filiations BELOW him (Maredudd, Madog) are contemporary-chronicle attested (Brut y Tywysogyon; Lloyd read first-hand) - the FRONTIER flag on this record refers ONLY to his own parents ABOVE, where the pedigree tracts begin. Do not re-flag the man as unverified; the flag marks where verification ends, not that it is absent.
