Research notes

~ Brian, father of Alan fitz Brian of Bedale. Complete Peerage V (1926) made him 'Brian fitz Alan, br. of Conan, Duke of Brittany and Earl of Richmond' (Cartulary of Ely), i.e. a son of Alan, Earl of Richmond (d.1146); that descent was withdrawn in the Complete Peerage corrections (vol. XIV), following C.T. Clay, Early Yorkshire Charters v p.201, which makes him son of Scolland. Clay's version entered. Clay (EYC v pp.199-202): Brian son of Scolland witnessed with his father a charter of Earl Alan and one of Earl Conan 1156-58; confirmed his father's gift to Castle Acre; held 5 knights' fees of the honour of Richmond incl. Askham Bryan; dead by 1171; children Alan, Henry, Michael and Constance (wife of Ranulf of Gosberton). Clay states the FitzAlans' descent from him is 'assumed' (YAJ 1931; Farrer concurring) - hence ~; the Richmond descent is not wired.
