~ Catherine (Catharine), wife of Sir Richard Butler of Polestown (Poolestown), co. Kilkenny, second son of James, 3rd Earl of Ormond, and mother of Sir Edmund Butler MacRichard of Polestown (d. 13 Jun 1464): Lodge, 'Sir Richard was seated at Poolestown in the county of Kilkenny, and married Catharine, daughter of Gildas O Reily, Lord of the county of Cavan; by whom he had Sir Edmond Butler Mac Richard, who built the castle of Polestown, and the castle and bridge of Carrick, and dying 13 June 1464 ...'. Entered at ~ on Lodge alone: Complete Peerage (vol. VI, Ormond, p.145) names no wife for Sir Richard. FATHER NOT WIRED: Lodge's 'Gildas O Reily' (Giolla Iosa O Raghallaigh) cannot be the well-known Giolla Iosa Ruadh, lord of East Breifne, who died in 1330 (AFM) - two generations too early for a wife of a man born c.1390 - so either a later namesake in the O'Reilly house or a slip in Lodge; left note-only until an annal or pedigree names the right man. An alternative sometimes given online (a daughter of an Earl of Desmond) appears in no reference work consulted. Source: Lodge, Peerage of Ireland (1789) vol.
