About

Dungal mac Fergaile (died 842), King of Osraige for forty years, took his throne in 802 just as the first longships appeared on the Irish coasts, and held his midland kingdom steady through the Viking age's violent dawn. His children made the family's name: Cerball, the saga-famous warlord; Riacan, who ruled after him; and Land, the queen who married successive Irish kings - the High King Mael Sechnaill among them - and stirred the kingdoms against the Norse.

Research notes

✓~ WIRED 9 Oct 2026 (Osraige extension, Aynsley's go): PERSON = own 40-year reign (802-842) + death 842, standard accounts (Downham 'The career of Cearbhall'; Mac Niocaill). FILIATION DOWN doubly locked: son Cerball 'mac Dunlainge' (Dunlang = variant of Dungal) + daughter LAND 'ingen Dungaile', Queen of Leinster/Tara. FILIATION UP: his own patronymic mac Fergaile. ⚠ DISAMBIGUATION: distinct from DUNGAL MAC CELLAIG, King of Osraige 770-772, of the rival Cellach sept - do not conflate. ⚠ 'Dunlang/Dunlaing' spelling has NOTHING to do with the Ui Dunlainge dynasty.
