Ebalus 'Manzer' (c.870-935), Count of Poitou and Duke of Aquitaine, carried his byname; 'the bastard'; all his life and outfought it: twice dispossessed of Poitou, he twice won it back, and rebuilt the Aquitanian duchy his descendants would hold for two centuries. From him the ducal line runs down to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and through her to us.
