About

Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick, Justiciar of Ireland, held the English colony together through the Bruce invasion, breaking the Scots' Irish allies in the field while famine broke everything else. He married Joan FitzGerald of the Kildare house, and their son James became the first Earl of Ormond - the earldom that would spar and intermarry with the Geraldines for four hundred years, with this family descended from both corners of the quarrel.
