~ DOCUMENTED BUT DISPUTED (web-confirmed 25 Jul 2026): EMMA DE CONTEVILLE, traditionally a daughter of HERLUIN DE CONTEVILLE by HERLEVA (Herleve of Falaise, the mother of WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR) - which would make her a UTERINE HALF-SISTER of the Conqueror and full sister of Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, and Robert, Count of Mortain; wife of Richard le Goz; mother of Margaret le Goz (our line). *** THIS IS THE 'NORMAN DUCAL KIN' RUNG - BUT IT IS CONTESTED: C.P. Lewis (2014) argues the identification of Hugh d'Avranches's mother as Emma de Conteville rests on 'unsatisfactory evidence'. Graded ~ accordingly: the Chester-to-Conqueror's-mother link is TRADITIONAL, not secure. *** ASSESSMENT CLOSED 25 Jul 2026 - THIS IS NOT A PENDING 'CHEAP TEST' / outstanding task. It has been examined against the modern authorities and is UNPROVABLE ON SURVIVING EVIDENCE: no primary source even names Emma's parents (the CP 'Emma' has no identified source), and the sole supporting text - a late St Werburgh's, Chester MS reading 'nepos Gulielmi magni ex sorore' - is discredited because the same sentence wrongly calls Hugh 'son of the Duke of Brittany'. Lewis (2014) = mother 'unknown'; Keats-Rohan (1999) = some kinship likely but evidence poor. No archival test remains that specialists have not already run. The ~ here is a PERMANENT, honest edge - a mark of rigour, NOT a to-do. Do not re-flag as an unfinished check.
