Fernan Gonzalez made Castile effectively independent of Leon and became the founder-hero of Castilian identity, celebrated for centuries in the epic poem that bears his name - the count who answered to no king. He died in 970. He and his wife Sancha of Pamplona stand in this tree as a couple, with two of their children carrying separate roads.
