About
Gilbert (c.890-939), Duke of Lorraine, held the great middle duchy between France and Germany and changed allegiance as often as the balance shifted. Married to Gerberga, daughter of Henry the Fowler, he rose against his brother-in-law Otto the Great in 939 and, fleeing the rout at Andernach, drowned in the Rhine; his horse leapt from an overloaded boat, the chronicle says. His widow married the King of France; our line runs through his daughter Alberada.
