About
Gilbert FitzRichard, Lord of Clare and Tunbridge, is one of the great junctions of this tree. Three separate descents run down from him: through his daughter Alice, who married Aubrey de Vere the second and carries the Oxford line; through his son Richard, ancestor of the de Clare earls of Hertford and Gloucester; and through his son Gilbert, first Earl of Pembroke, whose son was Strongbow. The conquest of England, the earldom of Oxford and the invasion of Ireland all trace back to one man's children.
Research notes
✓ DOCUMENTED as to the relationship (CP vol. X p.198): GILBERT FITZRICHARD, LORD OF CLARE AND TUNBRIDGE (de Clare) - father of Alice (m. Aubrey de Vere II - our line), of Richard FitzGilbert (ancestor of the de Clare EARLS of Hertford/Gloucester - collateral) and of Gilbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (father of STRONGBOW - collateral, and a pleasing loop: the FitzMaurice/Geraldine ladder elsewhere in this tree stems from Strongbow's own invasion companions). FATHER WIRED 23 Jul 2026: son of RICHARD FITZGILBERT DE CLARE, the Domesday magnate (I99559), by ROHESE GIFFARD - the house above THEM (Count Gilbert of Brionne; the ducal house of Normandy via a natural-son step, which is a fact of parentage and not a weakness in the evidence) = note-only, extendable. ROGER DAMORY CROSS-REFERENCE (added 22 Jul 2026): the collateral earls' line from his son Richard ended in the three coheiresses of 1314, one of whom - ELIZABETH DE CLARE, 'the Lady of Clare', foundress of Clare College Cambridge, granddau. of Edward I - married (1317) ROGER DAMORY (d. 1322), the very figure of the PATERNAL Damery name-and-arms tradition. She is NOT an ancestress (her only Damory child carried the line to the Bardolfs). RELATIONSHIP TIGHTENED 23 Jul 2026 by the Thomond wiring: Elizabeth de Clare's father Gilbert 'the Red Earl' (6th Earl of Gloucester) and Aynsley's direct ancestor THOMAS DE CLARE OF THOMOND (I99563) were BROTHERS, both sons of Richard, 5th Earl (I99565) - so Elizabeth de Clare is the FIRST COUSIN of Aynsley's direct ancestress Margaret de Clare (I99561): ROGER DAMORY MARRIED THE FIRST COUSIN OF A DIRECT ANCESTRESS. The third convergence of the tree on Roger d'Amory (with the ? name/arms tradition and the Ryves purchase of Damory Court 1548 - Robert Ryves note) is thus now first-cousin-close, not distant. Still no proof of the paternal name-legend; but the baron it names married into the immediate family of the maternal line. Direct ancestor. Added 22 Jul 2026; relationship tightened 23 Jul 2026.
