Henry of Essex (d. c.1170), Constable of England and royal standard-bearer under Stephen and Henry II, lord of Rayleigh and Haughley; father of Agnes of Essex, third wife of the 1st Earl of Oxford. Accused of dropping the royal standard in a Welsh ambush (1157), he lost a judicial duel to Robert de Montfort in 1163 and forfeited everything.
