About
Hugh le Despenser, Justiciar of England for the baronial party, stood by Simon de Montfort to the last hour and fell beside him in the slaughter at Evesham in 1265, refusing offered escape. His grandson and great-grandson would die on gallows serving the crown his principles had opposed - three generations of Despensers, dying violently on both sides of the same long argument about how England should be governed.
