About
James FitzGerald, sixth Earl of Desmond, displaced his nephew and held the earldom until his death; he is the same James whose daughter Honora, by the Burke's Peerage account, married the seventh Baron of Kerry - so the man long carried in this tree as a note-only claim now enters it by a documented road.
Research notes
✓ JAMES FITZGERALD, 6th EARL OF DESMOND ('the usurper', d.1462/3); father of Thomas the beheaded Earl (our line). ⭐ CROSS-REFERENCE: this is the 'James Geraldine, Earl of Desmond' claimed as father of HONORA (I99553, note-only splice per Burke's Lansdowne) - her splice stays at its grade, but the man himself is now a DIRECT ANCESTOR via the Roche gateway. Wife note-only (Mary de Burgh per some accounts). Source: CP 'Fermoy' pp.327 + the standard Desmond succession (numbering follows identity; the earls' ordinals vary between authorities because of the 1462 usurpation); contested rungs note-only.
