✓ as a person: JOAN, natural daughter of John, King of England; m. after 16 Apr 1205 Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, Prince of Gwynedd (King John's charter granting Ellesmere 'Lewelino principi Norwallie in maritagium cum Johanna filia nostra'); sent by her husband to make peace with her father in 1211; legitimated by Pope Honorius III 29 Apr 1226; in 1230 Llywelyn hanged William de Braose, 'caught in the chamber of the prince with the princess Jannet, daughter of King John' (Brut); d. Feb/Mar 1237 at Aber, buried in a new cemetery on the shore, where Llywelyn founded a Franciscan friary for her. Mother of Dafydd, Prince of Wales (Annales Cambriae: 'David filius eius de Johanna filia Johannis regis Angliae'). Her mother is named as 'regina Clementia' in the Annals of Tewkesbury (MedLands: Clementia Pinel) - not wired. ~ AS MOTHER OF GWLADUS DDU (I100192): CP IX p.276 states it ('by his 2nd wife, Joan (illegit. da. of King John)'); Medieval Lands treats Gwladus as illegitimate, mother unknown, noting that no source earlier than Dwnn's 1597 Visitation (which gives 'Tangwystl') names her mother. Reference works split, so ~. Margaret ferch Llywelyn (I100676) is NOT placed under Joan: no source seen names her mother. Sources: Complete Peerage IX (1936) 'Mortimer' p.276 (page image supplied by Aynsley 28 Oct 2026); Medieval Lands (fmg.ac, Cawley), 'Wales', Gwynedd (Llywelyn ab Iorwerth), read 28 Oct 2026.
