Research notes

✓ John Giffard, lord of the manor of Itchel (Itchell) in Crondall, Hants, holding in 1428 and d. 10 Jun 1444, 'leaving a son and heir Robert. Two years later Robert Giffard died without issue, and land in Cove was held in dower by his widow Joan ... until 1478. The manor of Itchel, however, passed to his brother John, who was returned as the owner in 1461' - that John being Sir John Giffard (I100384), father of Jane, wife of the judge Sir John Kingsmill. Wife not named by VCH. TOP - DELIBERATE STOP: VCH does not say how this John related to the John Giffard (son of William, younger brother of the John d. 1327) who held Itchel in 1379, whose probable widow Mary (afterwards Southworth) held it in 1418 - possibly his son, but VCH does not state it, so nothing above him is wired. The Itchel Giffards descend from the nephew and heir of Godfrey Giffard, Bishop of Worcester (d. 1302), brother of Walter Giffard, Archbishop of York, who acquired the manor c.1250; they are NOT connected to the Norman Giffards of Longueville elsewhere in this tree. A pasted chain 'John d.1444 < Osbert d.c.1410 < Sir John < Sir Osbert d.c.1330 x Joan' was checked 27 Oct 2026 and REJECTED - no Osbert appears in the VCH descent of Itchel.
