Research notes
✓ JOHN TONSON RYE, of RYE COURT, co. Cork; father of Eliza Anne. Burke's cross-refers to the RYE article ('see that family'). ||UPGRADED 7 Aug 2026 (page image read)|| 'RYE OF RYECOURT' p.614 NOW READ: he m. his cousin MARY, dau. of Samuel Godsell by Sophia dau. of James Badham Thornhill, and his line runs back five generations to CHRISTOPHER RYE, Alderman, SHERIFF OF CORK 1661 and MAYOR 1667-68. THE TONSON GUESS IS CONFIRMED but the seat corrected: the forename comes from ELIZABETH TONSON, dau. of HENRY TONSON of SPANISH ISLAND, co. Cork, who m. the Rev. Percy Meade - not from the Spa Hill/Dunkettle branch as guessed here this morning. Two peerage hooks fall out of the same page: the Meades (Earls of Clanwilliam) and the Evans (Lords Carbery). NO LONGER AN END OF LINE. Source: Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland, 'TABUTEAU-HERRICK OF SHIPPOOL' pp.316-17, page image read 7 Aug 2026. COLLATERAL, not in the direct line - these are the descendants of JANE HERRICK's eldest brother, i.e. the compiler's nearest documented Herrick cousins. Added 7 Aug 2026.
