About
Judith of France was a daughter of Charles the Bald and had already been twice a queen of Wessex, married first to King Aethelwulf and then to his son Aethelbald, before she eloped with Baldwin Iron Arm of Flanders in 862. So the West Saxon and Carolingian houses were entangled in her own lifetime, a generation before her descendant married Alfred the Great's daughter and sealed the connection properly.
