About

Liudolf (d.866), Duke of the Saxons, is the founder-figure of the Liudolfing house from which the Ottonian emperors sprang. With his wife Oda he made a pilgrimage to Rome and brought home papal blessing; and relics; for the family abbey of Gandersheim, ruled by three of his daughters in succession. Great-grandfather of Otto the Great, he stands at the head of the Saxon imperial line, and of ours.
