Lothair I (795-855), Emperor, eldest son of Louis the Pious, fought his brothers for the whole inheritance and lost at Fontenoy in 841; the Treaty of Verdun in 843 left him the middle kingdom - Lotharingia, which bears his name - and the empty imperial title. He died a monk at Prum.
