About

Louis VII (1120-1180), King of France, led the Second Crusade to the Holy Land and lived one of the century's great political dramas: his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine was annulled in 1152, whereupon she married Henry II of England and took half of France with her. Pious, mild and often outmanoeuvred, he nonetheless kept the crown's dignity intact for his son Philip Augustus to exploit. We descend from him through his daughter Alys.
