Maithan Maonmaighe O'Brien took his epithet from Maonmaighe near Loughrea, where he was fostered - the old Gaelic custom of fosterage written into a man's very name. He held the lordship of Thomond and died in 1369; his marriage to Winifred O'Connor carried the line onward.
