About
Margaret, wife of Robert de Ferrers, Lord Ferrers of Chartley, was the mother of John, the next lord. Her family is not known. Older peerage books gave Robert a wife called Agnes de Bohun, daughter of an Earl of Hereford, but modern work finds no evidence that such an Agnes existed, and the wife named in the records is Margaret.
Research notes
~ per per Complete Peerage, FERRERS (de Ferrers, Chartley), 1st edn pp.330-31, supplied by Aynsley 8 Aug 2026: 'said to have' been da. of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford (very likely the 4th Earl x Elizabeth Plantagenet, which would give a further Edward I descent) - but CP HEDGES, so she is FLOORED here, NOT looped into the royal Bohun line, pending confirmation of which Humphrey. Added 8 Aug 2026. CORRECTED 22 Oct 2026 (Aynsley's decision): renamed MARGARET, parentage unknown. Richardson, Royal Ancestry II pp.568-70 and Magna Carta Ancestry p.158, gives Robert de Ferrers (d.1350)'s first wife as Margaret (m. by 1330/33), mother of John, 3rd Lord Ferrers of Chartley (our line); his second wife Joan de Buckland, widow of Edward de la Mote, was mother of the Boteler-of-Wem branch. Complete Peerage (1st edn) only says he was 'said to have m. Agnes, da. of Humphrey (de Bohun), Earl of Hereford'; that Agnes's existence is doubtful, so no Bohun or Edward I descent is claimed. Old name kept as an alias.
