✓ Matilda (Mahalt, Maud) de Braose, daughter of William de Braose, 4th Lord of Bramber (I100137), and Maud de St Valery; wife of Gruffudd ap Rhys II (d. 1201), eldest son of the Lord Rhys, and mother of his sons Rhys Ieuanc (d. 1222) and Owain ap Gruffudd (d. 1235, I100830, our line). CHRONICLE-GRADE: Brut y Tywysogion s.a. 1210 - 'That year, on the feast of St Thomas the Martyr, Mahalt de Braose, the mother of the sons of Gruffudd ap Rhys, died at Llanbadarn Fawr, after receiving the holy communion, and confession and penance, and the habit of religion, and was buried with her husband at Strata Florida'; she witnesses as 'his mother Matilda' the 1202 charter of her son Rhys to Strata Florida (Bridgeman p.125, 'Resus filius Griffini filii Resi Magni'); the Brut repeatedly treats her brother Giles de Braose, Bishop of Hereford, as the uncle of Rhys and Owain. Bridgeman lists her among William de Braose's four daughters: 'Mahalt or Maud, wife of Griffith ap Res, Prince of South Wales'. RING: joins the Braose of Bramber already in the tree (her brother Reginald I100136 is an ancestor by another path). Source: Brut y Tywysogion s.a. 1210, as quoted in G.T.O. Bridgeman, History of the Princes of South Wales (1876) pp.81-82 (archive.org historyofprinces00bridiala), read 27 Oct 2026. [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 27 Oct 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.]
