About
Matthew Pennefather of Marlow was of the Tipperary family founded by the Cromwellian cornet, and he married Levina Kingsmill. His brother married Catherine Beresford of the Coleraine baronets, which knotted the Pennefathers to the family that became Marquesses of Waterford.
Research notes
SETTLED (Burke's LGI 'Pennefather of Rathsallagh' lineage, read in print by Aynsley, July 2026): TWO MATTHEWS, as entered. This Matthew was the Cornet's son and heir; m. Levina, dau. of WILLIAM KINGSMILL, M.P., of Ballybeg Abbey, co. Cork (see 'Kingsmill of Hermitage Park'), heir to the estates of Balyowen, afterwards NEW PARK; three sons - Kingsmill of New Park (High Sheriff 1703/08, MP for Cashel), Matthew (Lieut.-Col. in Gen. Sabine's Regt., 'gallantly distinguished at OUDENARDE', High Sheriff 1712, MP for Cashel 1716-33), and WILLIAM OF MARLOW (our line); daus. incl. Elizabeth, m. 1735 Alexander, 5th EARL OF ANTRIM. *** WATERFORD / BERESFORD COLLATERAL LINK (added 23 Jul 2026, Burke's Peerage BERESFORD/WATERFORD pedigree + this Pennefather note): the son COL. MATTHEW PENNEFATHER (MP Cashel, brother of William of Marlow, our direct ancestor) m. 1697 CATHERINE BERESFORD, dau. of Sir Randal Beresford, 2nd Bt of Coleraine - of the very family that became EARLS OF TYRONE and then MARQUESSES OF WATERFORD. Catherine was sister of Sir Tristram Beresford 3rd Bt and AUNT of Sir Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone, whose son was 1st Marquess of Waterford. So Aynsley's family and the Waterford Beresfords were joined BY MARRIAGE in 1697, ONE STEP off his direct line (via a brother) - NOT a blood descent (Aynsley descends from William of Marlow, the Colonel's brother, not from the Beresford marriage). A pleasing modern echo: Aynsley's cousin Amanda ('Mandy') Thompson m. 1986 the present Marquess of Waterford (Henry Nicholas de la Poer Beresford) - so the two families are linked again, ~290 years later. Collateral, recorded not wired.
