About
Maud de Badlesmere married John, seventh Earl of Oxford, and through her the Clare inheritance enters this line. Her mother was Margaret de Clare, who barred Queen Isabella from Leeds Castle in 1321 and is said to have become the first woman imprisoned in the Tower of London for it; her father Bartholomew was hanged the following year in the same purge that killed Roger Damory.

✓ DOCUMENTED (standard CP account; the Badlesmere coheirship is confirmed in the PHOTOGRAPHED CP X p.257 note a - "the Veres were only coheirs to the Barony of Badlesmere, which... fell into abeyance in 1338"): MAUD, dau. of BARTHOLOMEW, LORD BADLESMERE (executed 1322 - now wired, I99562) by MARGARET DE CLARE of the Thomond branch (wired 23 Jul 2026 - opening the second Clare descent, the Marshal/Strongbow lines and the royal summit) and sister and coheir of Giles, last Lord Badlesmere (d. 1338) - whence the Vere coheirship argued about for centuries after; Countess of the 7th Earl; d. 1366. Mother of the 8th Earl (collateral) and of AUBREY THE 10TH EARL (our line). Direct ancestress. Added 22 Jul 2026.
