✓ Maud, second wife (married before 1379) of Sir Ralph Hastings of Slingsby (I100071, d. 1397), and mother of his five sons Ralph (beheaded 1405/6), Richard, Leonard (I99589), John and Bartholomew, and of a daughter Maud; his first wife Isabel de Saddington had only a daughter, Margaret. As a widow she married Sir Ralph Botreaux; living 28 Nov 1423. Source: D. Richardson, Royal Ancestry (2013) vol. III pp. 365-366 (as quoted on WikiTree Sutton-419). SURNAME DISPUTED: Richardson calls her MAUD GREY ('neither a Meaux or a Sutton as often claimed in print'), on circumstantial evidence set out by Rosie Bevan, soc.genealogy.medieval 2003 (an assault case, the 1427 dispensation for Richard Hastings and Elizabeth Beaumont, Lord Lovel calling William Hastings 'kinsman'); Collins (1768) and Brooke, Slingsby (1904) make her daughter of Sir Robert de Sutton of Sutton in Holderness; Blashill (1896) gives Ralph a wife Alice de Meaux; others call her Maud de St John, widow of John Meaux. PARENTAGE WIRED ~ 15 Oct 2026 (Aynsley agreed): daughter of John, 2nd Lord Grey of Rotherfield (I101102) and Maud de Burghersh (I101103). The case (Rosie Bevan, soc.genealogy.medieval 1 Oct 2003, adopted by Richardson): (1) Complete Peerage IV p.126 records that the 1427 marriage of her son Sir Richard Hastings to Elizabeth Beaumont, widow of William, Lord Deincourt, needed a dispensation because the two men were related in the 2nd and 3rd degrees - exactly the relationship if Maud and Robert, Lord Grey (grandfather of William Deincourt through his daughter Joan) were children of John Grey x Maud Burghersh; (2) Maud held Sutton-in-Holderness in dower, and Robert de Grey of Rotherfield held land in Sutton in 1375 (TNA E 210/416); (3) her sons Bartholomew and Richard bear the names of her presumed brothers Bartholomew and Richard de Grey (CIPM xvi no.582). Circumstantial - no document names her father - hence ~. Sources: Complete Peerage VI pp.145-148 (GREY of Rotherfield); D. Richardson, Royal Ancestry (2013) III p.364, IV pp.274-277; Magna Carta Ancestry (2005) p.630; as compiled by Bill Marshall's database (billmarshall.s3, I18696, I148058) and our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com p1534.
