✓ Matilda 'la Meschine', daughter of William FitzRanulf Meschin, lord of Copeland and (by marriage) of Skipton-in-Craven (I101894), by Cecily de Rumilly, Lady of Skipton (I101895); m. 1stly Philip de Belmeis (founder of Lilleshall Abbey, whose charter is witnessed by 'domina Matilda filia Willielmi Meschin uxor praedicti Philippi de Belmis'; he was living 1145), and 2ndly c.1150 Hugh de Mortimer of Wigmore (I100195); living 1189. CP's proofs (summarised by Medieval Lands): pleadings concerning Kimbolton and a 1282 Chester county court plea both name Roger de Mortimer (d. 1214, I100193) as son and heir of 'Maud la Meschine'; Roger granted rents at Bisley given him by 'his brothers Philip and Ranulph de Belmeis'; Clay notes she inherited land in Great Caldy, Cheshire, from her father. Hugh's own charter says all his English gifts were made 'antequam duxissem uxorem', indicating he married only once. The Wigmore foundation narrative's 'Matildem Longespey' is dismissed as confused.
