About
Maurice FitzGerald, second Lord of Offaly, was Justiciar of Ireland for thirteen years, campaigned in Connacht, Ulster and Wales, founded the town and castle of Sligo, and ended his days in the habit of a Franciscan friar in the friary he had founded at Youghal, dying in 1257. He is the common ancestor of the two great Geraldine houses, Kildare and Desmond - and this family descends from him by both, and by a third road through his son the Justiciar besides.
