About
Mountiford Westropp came to Ireland from Cornborough in Yorkshire and settled at Limerick in 1657, the same year that Vere Hunt settled at Curragh. Two ancestors of this family, an army officer and a customs official, stepped ashore in one county in one year and never knew each other; their descendants married five generations later. He was made Comptroller of the Port of Limerick in 1660 and served twice as High Sheriff of Clare. In 1690 his horses and arms were confiscated for the use of James the Second, which tells you which way he was thought to lean. He died in August 1698.

London 1657); executor to his father 1657, "IN WHICH YEAR HE SETTLED AT LIMERICK" (the same year Vere Hunt settled at Curragh); COMPTROLLER OF THE PORT OF LIMERICK 18 Feb 1660; purchased Ballynamean & Kilkerin (barony of Clonderlaw) 1671, Dromline and Bunratty, co. Clare; HIGH SHERIFF OF CLARE 1674 and 1698; "his horses and arms were confiscated for use of James II, 10 April, 1690"; one of the Commissioners for Clare under the Act of 1697; will dated at Bunratty 14 Aug 1698, proved Dublin 15 Oct 1698; d. 24 Aug 1698. m. FRANCES TAYLOR of the Ballinort family (our line).
