Research notes
✓ Nigel de Stafford, Domesday tenant (1086) of nine manors and two sokes in Derbyshire and holdings in Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire, partly in chief and partly under Henry de Ferrers; benefactor of Elstow nunnery ('cum filia sua') and of St Albans (church of Norton juxta Twycross); perhaps living c.1115. His heirs were the Gresleys (a 1224 concord shows Geoffrey de Gresley heir of Nigel de Stafford). TOP: Madan calls him 'the great crux of the Gresley pedigree'. Earlier writers (Dugdale, Eyton) made him a son of Roger I de Tosny and brother of Robert de Stafford; Madan: 'There is no evidence whatever of this, and chronological probabilities are against it.' Madan's own suggestion that he was a son of Robert de Stafford (I102074) is 'more or less probable conjecture' - NOT wired. Wife unknown, 'even traditionally'.
