About

Patrick of Salisbury, first earl, was cut down from behind by the Lusignans in 1168 while escorting Eleanor of Aquitaine, unarmoured; his young nephew William Marshal was captured avenging him, and the queen paid the boy's ransom - the making of the greatest knight began at Patrick's death.
