About
Patrick FitzMaurice, seventeenth Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw, was born in 1595 and survived one of the more extraordinary childhoods in this tree. At the siege of Listowel Castle in November 1600 the garrison's five-year-old boy, the eldest son, was smuggled out on an old woman's back, tracked six miles through nearly impassable woodland to a cave, and given up to the Lord Deputy in Dublin. That child was Patrick. Three hundred years earlier an ancestress had brought Listowel into the family by marriage; the castle stands at both ends of the story.

✓ DOCUMENTED (Burke's LANSDOWNE lineage pp.2238-39): PATRICK FITZMAURICE, 17TH BARON OF KERRY AND LIXNAW; b. 1595; "brought up a Protestant"; m. by March 1617/8 HONORA FITZGERALD, dau. of Sir Edmond FitzGerald of Ballymaloe and Cloyne, co. Cork; bur. 5 Jan 1660/1. Children incl. William 18th Baron (our line), Raymond, and dau. ELIZABETH who m. 1st THOMAS AMORY, "Victualler Navy" (⚠ by-catch for the DAMERY-side Amary/Amory analysis: another Kerry-FitzMaurice/Amory alliance - log against the 1669 Cork Amary bond question). THE LISTOWEL CAVE RESCUE IS HIS: at the siege of Listowel Castle, Nov 1600, the garrison's 'child of five years' - the eldest son, b. 1595, ages matching to the year - was smuggled out on an old woman's back, tracked six miles to a cave in an 'almost impassable wood' by soldiers guided by the priest Sir Dermot McBrodie (who bargained his own life and the child's), and sent to the Lord Deputy in Dublin. The child grew up to be this Patrick, 17th (trad.) Baron.
