About
Richard Damery and his wife Margaret are the earliest Damerys anybody has found in Ireland. Margaret was buried at Bandon in 1696 and a son, John, in 1708, which means the family was already established in the town by about 1690, in the window the tradition of a flight from England points to. Whether the documented line descends from them cannot be shown: the join runs through a generation the registers no longer record. They stand at the head of the family's oldest wall, and the wall is still standing.

Richard Damery of Bandon (fl. 1690s) - with his wife Margaret, the EARLIEST DOCUMENTED Damerys of the town. Margaret was buried at Bandon in 1696, and a son, John, buried there in 1708. Their descent to Richard Damery of Ballymodan (b. ~1720, head of the documented line) runs by inference through a William "of Ballymodan," but CANNOT be proven: Richard ~1720's own baptism is lost, and the only register "Richard son of William" (bapt. 1727) died an infant in 1728. Family tradition brings the Damerys from the English West Country (Devon/Gloucestershire) in the later 1600s; unproven. Aynsley's earliest documented direct ancestor on the Damery line.
