Research notes

✓ Robert de Byron the elder, first Byron lord of Clayton: between 1194 and 1212 Robert Grelley, baron of Manchester, granted him 'fourteen oxgangs of his demesne of Manchester to be held by the service of half a knight' (VCH fn.20); m. Cecily; 'had several sons'. Ancestor of the Byrons of Clayton and Newstead (Lords Byron, and so of the poet - collateral). TOP: VCH does not name his father; the family's earlier Domesday ancestry (Ralph de Burun) is tradition, not wired. Source: Victoria County History of Lancaster vol.
