About

Roger de Tosny went to fight the Moors in Spain a generation before anyone called it crusading, came home with a terrible reputation and Spanish gold, and died fighting his neighbours.

Research notes

✓ ES/standard: ROGER I DE TOSNY 'the Spaniard' (d. c.1040); father of Adeliza wife of William FitzOsbern (our line). UPDATE 25 Oct 2026: father Raoul II, grandfather Raoul I and great-grandfather Hugues de Calvacamp wired ✓ (Acta Archiepiscoporum Rothomagensium; William of Jumieges); the Malahulc tradition above them stays note-only. Added 14 Sep 2026. UPDATE 25 Oct 2026: his second wife Godehildis and their son Raoul III wired, reuniting the Conches Tosnys in this tree. ||27 Oct 2026 - SON ADDED|| Robert de Stafford, the Domesday baron of Stafford, 'yr. s. of Roger de Toeni' (CP XII/1 'Stafford' p.168, from his own Conches charter) - the Stafford earls descend from this Roger in the male line. Source: Complete Peerage 2nd ed. vol. XII part 1 (1953), 'Stafford' pp.168-170 and notes (page images supplied by Aynsley, read 27 Oct 2026). ||27 Oct 2026 - FILIATION DOWNGRADED TO ~|| ONE ROGER OR TWO? The charters prove only that Adeliza (wife of William FitzOsbern), Raoul III and Robert de Stafford were children of 'Roger de Tosny'. Medieval Lands follows Keats-Rohan and Salazar Acha in splitting him: Roger [I] 'the Spaniard', son of Raoul II (b. c.990, killed c.1040 with his sons Elbert and Elinant), and a younger Roger [II] de Conches (parentage not ascertained, 'presumably nephew'), both witnesses to the Jumieges charter of c.1040 ('Rodgerii filii Rodulfi ... Rogerii de Conchis'). On that view Roger [II], husband of Godehildis, is the father of Raoul III and probably of Adeliza and Robert de Stafford, and this record conflates two men. CP XII/1 (1953), Europaische Stammtafeln and Musset keep one Roger, which is how the tree stands. Reference works split, so the rung from this Roger up to Raoul II is ~ until decided; the line above Raoul II (Raoul I, Hugues de Calvacamp) is unaffected either way. Tosny, read in the browser 27 Oct 2026; CP XII/1 'Stafford' p.168 (1953). ||27 Oct 2026 - MARRIAGE NOTE, NOT WIRED|| Ademar de Chabannes (before 1034) says 'Rotgerius', leading Normans fighting the Saracens in Spain, asked the widowed Countess Ermesinde of Barcelona for her daughter's hand (c.1017/20). No primary source names her; ES calls her 'Adelaida (Papia)', unconfirmed; Salazar Acha's identification with Estefania, later Queen of Navarre, is rejected by Medieval Lands on chronology. Nothing identifies her with Godehildis, and if there were two Rogers she belongs to Roger [I] alone. No Barcelona ring; mother of Adeliza and Robert de Stafford unknown.
