Research notes
~ Siemowit (Ziemowit), founder of the Piast dynasty as a ruling house: Gallus Anonymus 'Semovith filius Pazt Chossistcomis', who overthrew the house of Popiel and became ruler of the Polanians; Annales Polanorum 'Peast genuit Semovith de domna Repeka'. Regarded by most historians as the earliest probably-historical Piast (the dynasty's rise in the later 9th century matches the archaeological expansion of the Gniezno strongholds). TOP - DELIBERATE STOP: his father Piast 'the wheelwright' (son of Choscisko) and mother/wife Rzepka (the chronicles disagree which) belong to the dynasty's foundation legend and are not entered. Source: Medieval Lands, 'Poland' ch.1 A (fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/POLAND.htm), quoting Gallus Anonymus (Chronicae Polanorum, c.1115), the Annales Polanorum and the Chronica principum Polonie; read 27 Oct 2026.
