About
Sir Edmond FitzGerald of Ballymaloe and Cloyne in east Cork was the father of Honora, who married the seventeenth Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw. His corner of the county, the ground around Cloyne and the lower Blackwater, turns up more than once in this family's records from quite different directions.
Research notes
✓ DOCUMENTED as to the relationship (Burke's LANSDOWNE lineage): SIR EDMOND FITZGERALD, of BALLYMALOE and CLOYNE, co. Cork - father of Honora (m. 17th Baron Kerry). NB Ballymaloe and Cloyne: the same corner of east Cork as the Castle Hyde/Cloyne records elsewhere in this project. Direct ancestor. Added 21 Jul 2026. ||26 Oct 2026|| PARENTS WIRED and death added: DIB 'Fitzgerald, Sir John fitz Edmund' - Edmund was the eldest legitimate son of Sir John fitz Edmund FitzGerald of Cloyne and Ballymaloe (c.1528-1612); 'Although Edmund only outlived his father by two months, Edmund's young son John fitz Edmund Fitzgerald II nonetheless succeeded to his grandfather's and namesake's extensive estates' - so d. c. Mar 1612. His mother is NOT known: DIB says Sir John 'is said to have married Honora, daughter of Tadhg O'Brien and niece to Donough O'Brien, 4th earl of Thomond, but this can only be the case if they married very late in his life; she cannot have been the mother of his children.' DIB also says Sir John 'married his son Edmund to the seneschal's widow' (widow of John fitz Edmund FitzGerald, seneschal of Imokilly, d. 1589) - compatible with CP VII's Ellen Barry (I101747) as a second marriage for her, but the identity of the seneschal's widow is not stated; note only. Owen O'Sullivan Mór). WikiTree makes Honora 'presumably' the 2nd wife; the DIB context (1590s) and Honor's marriage by 1617/8 suggest the reverse order, Ellen Barry being the later wife. The tomb at Cloyne gives Edmond's age as 43 (b. c.1569). MacCotter 2016 traces this Cloyne line to the Knights of Kerry and so to John fitz Thomas of Desmond - wired 26 Oct 2026.
