Research notes

~ Sir John de Burgh, 'of Lanvaley', father of Margaret, Countess of Ulster, wife of Richard de Burgh, the Red Earl (CP VII 'Kildare': Joan, Countess of Kildare, 'da. of Richard (de Burgh), Earl of Ulster, by Margaret, da. of Sir John de Burgh, of Lanvaley'). His parentage is not stated in CP as read: commonly made son of John de Burgh (knighted 1229; son and heir of Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, by his 1st wife Beatrice de Warenne - CP VII 'Kent' p.145 n.) and Hawise de Lanvaley (Richardson, Royal Ancestry, as cited by WikiTree) - NOT wired until a reference work naming the link is read. TOP - nothing further wired. Source: Complete Peerage 2nd edn vol. VII (1929), 'Kildare' p.221 (Joan, Countess of Kildare) and 'Kent' pp.133-145 (Hubert de Burgh), read 5 Nov 2026 (archive.org djvu text). [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 2 Nov 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||5 Nov 2026 - REGRADED ✓ -> ~ (CONFLICT NOTED, LINK KEPT)|| CP VII makes Margaret, Countess of Ulster, 'da. of Sir John de Burgh, of Lanvaley'. That is John de Burgh of Wakerley, Northants, who held 'the barony of Launvaley' and m. Cecily Balliol. But the writ after his death ('3 Mar 8 Edw I', 1280) names as 'his next heirs and of full age' only 'three daughters, Dervorguilla whom Robert son of Walter married, Hawis whom Robert de Grelee married, and Margery who is a nun at Chikessaunt'. Margaret, married to the Red Earl before 27 Feb 1281, is not among them, as she would be if his daughter. Under the working rule (CP followed unless clear contradiction; CP-backed statement shown unsupported -> ~) the link stays, at ~. The descent from Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent (via John, son of Hubert, x Hawise de Lanvaley) stays NOTE-ONLY. A pasted AI summary (5 Nov) claiming Richardson's Royal Ancestry III pp.454-457 lists Margaret as a coheir with Devorguilla and Hawise was checked against this writ and NOT used; Richardson itself not seen.
