Research notes

~ Sir Peter (Pierce) Butler, Knt., Lord of Dunboyne and Mullingar, son and heir of Sir Thomas (k. 1329) by Simolda le Petit; 'received a great overthrow on the confines of Meath' 12 May 1309 (so Lodge; the date sits oddly before his father's death - possibly a different Peter, or a misdated entry); grant of 100 marks 17 Aug 1358 (Pat. 32 Edw. III) for killing the rebel Gille-Patrick Philippson, secured on the manor of Grenagh, co. Kilkenny; on Friday before St James 1370 'made an entail of his estate (contained in an inspeximus 15 Ric. II) of the manors of Dunboyne, Moymet, etc. on Thomas, Nicholas, Richard, William and Edmund, his sons, in tail male; remainder to his own heirs for ever' (Lodge vi p.221). Grade ~: CP IV p.516 n.(c) counts Edmund 1st Baron as '9th in descent' from Sir Thomas, one more generation than Lodge gives, so a rung may be missing hereabouts.
