Research notes

✓ Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara, of the O'Brien lords of Arra (Ara, north Tipperary); father of Ownye, 2nd wife of Conor 3rd Earl of Thomond (CP VII p.212). NOT identified here with Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara, Bishop of Killaloe, whom MedLands (IRELAND, Desmond) names as father of Amy, Countess of Desmond (wife of James 11th Earl, then of Edmond FitzMaurice, Baron of Kerry): the bishop died c.1525 and Ownye's husband was born c.1534, so she was more likely a grand-daughter of the bishop's generation. His own parents not wired; the Arra pedigree is the next step. Source: Complete Peerage 2nd ed. vol. VII (1929), 'Kerry' p.212 (archive.org djvu text, read 26 Oct 2026). [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 28 Oct 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||28 Oct 2026 - ASCENT AND WIFE WIRED (~)|| O'Hart 'O'Brien (No.6) of Ara' gen. 121: 'Turlogh, who m. Mor, dau. of Donogh (FitzJohn) O'Carroll, and had five sons and one dau.' - the daughter being 'Winifred, who m. Connor, the third Earl of Thomond' (= CP's Ownye; Una was regularly anglicised Winifred). Son of Murtogh Caoch, and so through seven generations from Brian Ruadh, King of Thomond (k. 1277), to Connor na Suidaine - RING. CORRECTION to the note above: the Bishop of Killaloe in this family is his SON Murtogh (Protestant bishop, d. 1613); the earlier Bishop Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara (d. c.1525) is not placed. Source: John O'Hart, Irish Pedigrees (5th ed. 1892), 'O'Brien (No.6) - Of Ara, in the County of Tipperary', gen. nos. as cited (Library Ireland transcription, read 28 Oct 2026); O'Hart's own authority is the MS 'Mac Ui-Brien Ara', Trinity College Dublin H.1.7. ~ throughout: single compiled Gaelic pedigree, not checked against the annals rung by rung.
